The first Giro set the tone. A route through Germany, over the Swiss Alps and down to Lake Como became a trip that would carry on into the following years — breakdowns included.

The journey
A route becomes a story.

Germany first
The Nürburgring was an early stop before the group travelled south through Germany to Stuttgart, where the trip took in some nightlife.

Over the Swiss Alps
From Stuttgart, the route wound through the Swiss Alps towards Lake Como. Mountain roads gave way to a quieter visit by the lake.

Como, then the Grand Prix
A short stop at the Italian GP followed the Como visit. The first Giro had already joined up some very different sides of European car culture.

The principality & southern France
The lake was traded for Monaco and southern France. From there, the group turned north towards the tunnel and the journey home.

Almost home
With only hours to go before the tunnel, an MX-5 alternator failed. The car was limped back through the rain in Britain: a less glamorous finish, and a story that stayed with the trip.
